The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) awarded a 2-year, $469,159 Project Grant (CFDA 93.242 Mental Health Research Grants) to Rutgers, The State University to examine the relationships between social media use (SMU) and suicidal ideation (SI) among high-risk adolescents recently discharged from psychiatric hospitalization.

The study will use smartphone sensing and ecological momentary assessment to objectively measure patterns of negative and positive SMU, as well as sleep disruption, and evaluate their bidirectional relationships with SI. The goal is to advance understanding of how SMU impacts mental health and identify modifiable risk factors to inform suicide prevention programs and evidence-based SMU guidelines.

A sub-award of $134,338 was provided to Old Dominion University Research Foundation to support this project's research activities.
