The University of Utah was awarded a $231,000 Project Grant from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (CFDA 93.307 Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program) to conduct research aimed at understanding and reducing firearm suicide among Hispanic adults. The grant will fund the development of a natural language processing (NLP) pipeline to identify circumstances preceding Hispanic firearm suicide deaths, as well as the establishment of clinical typologies for distinct subgroups of Hispanic firearm suicide decedents based on demographic characteristics and preceding circumstances. This research is intended to provide critical insights that can inform the development and implementation of targeted suicide prevention interventions for Hispanic populations. The award period runs from September 2024 through June 2026.
