Emory University, a private research institution in Atlanta, has received a $234,750 Project Grant award from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program (CFDA 93.307). The objective of this 2-year project is to develop and pilot test a culturally-responsive mental health support intervention called "Weyera" for Ethiopian and Eritrean (Habesha) emerging adults in Atlanta. The project aims to enhance resilience and improve mental health outcomes in this underserved population, which faces significant challenges related to mental health, intergenerational trauma, and racism. The study will use a participatory approach to refine the intervention and then evaluate its feasibility, acceptability, and safety through a pilot randomized waitlist control trial. Results from this research will lay the groundwork for a larger efficacy trial of the Weyera intervention in the future, addressing critical gaps in knowledge and services for Black immigrant communities.
