Project Grant R21CA305033
- This Project Grant award from the National Cancer Institute (CFDA 93.393 - Cancer Cause and Prevention Research) provides $139,779 to Emory University to study the cancer outcomes among Michigan residents exposed to polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) in a 1973 industrial accident. The study aims to examine the potential association between PBB exposure and increased cancer risk, focusing on the unique opportunity to study the effects of an endocrine-disrupting chemical across different life stages....
- The National Cancer Institute (NCI), a division of the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded Drexel University a $588,359 Project Grant under the Cancer Cause and Prevention Research program (CFDA 93.393). The grant, which runs from May 19, 2025 to April 30, 2030, will evaluate the efficacy of a multi-level intervention, referred to as "EATWELL", designed to promote adherence to the dietary guidelines for cancer prevention recommended by the World Cancer Research Fund and...
- The federal Project Grant award of $397,772 was provided by the National Cancer Institute (CFDA 93.393 - Cancer Cause and Prevention Research program) to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The grant will fund the development of computational methods for profiling the cancer virome and analyzing microbial strain genetics from shotgun metagenomes and metatranscriptomes. This research aims to address key knowledge gaps in understanding the role of viruses and microbial strain variations...
- This Project Grant award from the National Cancer Institute (CFDA 93.398 Cancer Research Manpower program) provides $107,633 to Virginia Commonwealth University to conduct research examining the relationship between air pollution and lung and breast cancer risk using spatial data science methods. The award period runs from August 1, 2025 to July 31, 2027. The research aims to develop comprehensive, spatially-driven pollutant exposure metrics and assess their effects on cancer outcomes across the...
- The U.S. National Cancer Institute awarded a $724,840 Project Grant to the Regents of the University of California, San Francisco under the Cancer Cause and Prevention Research (CFDA 93.393) federal grant program. The grant supports a 5-year research project to investigate how persistent poverty impacts the risk of colorectal cancer through place-based factors, health behaviors, and underlying biological mechanisms. The study will leverage data from two large, geographically diverse U.S. cohorts...
- This $431,750.00 federal Project Grant award from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) under the Environmental Health program (CFDA 93.113) supports a two-year study at the University of Louisville to assess the environmental and health impacts of an industrial accident in Calvert City, Kentucky. The study aims to establish air quality monitoring sites, conduct wastewater surveillance, and perform quarterly biological sampling to comprehensively evaluate exposure...
- This Project Grant award from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), under the Environmental Health Federal Grant Program (CFDA 93.113), provides $120,903 to The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York to conduct a nationwide evaluation of the association between prenatal exposure to disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in public drinking water and adverse birth outcomes. The researchers will leverage nationwide estimates of public water DBP concentrations...
- The National Cancer Institute (NCI) awarded a $432,304 Project Grant under the Cancer Cause and Prevention Research (CFDA 93.393) program to The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York, Health Sciences Division. The grant, awarded on January 3, 2025, supports a 5-year research project focused on "Enhanced Cancer Risk Predictions in Underrepresented Populations through Robust Multi-Source Data Integration." The project aims to develop novel data integration methods to...
- The National Cancer Institute (NCI) awarded a $425,772 Project Grant (CFDA 93.393 - Cancer Cause and Prevention Research) to the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute Hospital, Inc. to conduct an epidemiologic study on the association between microplastic pollution in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and lung cancer. The award period runs from July 15, 2024 to June 30, 2026. The study aims to investigate the prevalence and potential health impacts of microplastic exposure in the...
- The University of Pittsburgh was awarded a $642,394 Project Grant under the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Cancer Cause and Prevention Research Program (CFDA 93.393) to investigate the impact of deoxyuridine (DU) contamination on innate immune responses. Specifically, the research aims to understand how ATR inhibitors, which increase DU incorporation into DNA, induce an interferon-beta response dependent on uracil DNA glycosylase (UNG)-mediated base excision repair. The project will run...
This $376,314 federal Project Grant was awarded by the National Cancer Institute (CFDA 93.393 - Cancer Cause and Prevention Research) to Drexel University on August 8, 2025. The objective of this study is to examine cause-specific cancer mortality in relation to levels of unregulated contaminants in public water systems. The research will be conducted through linkage of individual survey records from the Mortality Disparities in American Communities (MDAC) cohort with measurement of unregulated contaminants from the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR) sampling. The study aims to estimate associations between unregulated contaminants and cancer mortality among U.S. adults from 2008-2019, examining contaminants both individually and as mixtures. This project represents the first of its kind to leverage mandated public water system monitoring results through cohort data linkage to investigate cancer risks from unregulated drinking water contaminants.
