Project Grant R21CA297765
- The National Cancer Institute (NCI) awarded a $522,491 Cooperative Agreement to Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech) under the Cancer Biology Research (CFDA 93.396) program. The funding supports a 5-year research project to understand the role of interstitial fluid flow in glioblastoma, a deadly brain cancer, and leverage this knowledge to develop novel targeted treatment approaches. The key activities include: Leveraging mathematical modeling to map interstitial...
- The National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, awarded a $677,998 Project Grant under the Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research program (CFDA 93.394) to The Medical College of Wisconsin, Inc. (MCW). The project aims to externally validate and integrate radiopathomic models developed using autopsy and biopsy samples to better delineate the true extent of glioma tumors and identify microscopic infiltrating tumor cells. The research will refine...
- This Project Grant award of $163,640 from the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Research Manpower program (CFDA 93.398) supports research to develop novel non-viral gene delivery platforms for the treatment of glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer. The study aims to investigate the use of brain-penetrating nanoparticles modified to target tumor cells, and to further optimize gene delivery through focused ultrasound treatment. The research is being conducted at the University of Virginia,...
- This $997,410 Project Grant award from the National Cancer Institute under the Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research program (CFDA 93.394) aims to develop non-invasive MRI-based techniques to detect and differentiate between the invasive neuronal (NEU) and glycolytic/plurimetabolic (GPM) subtypes of high-grade glioma brain tumors. The project leverages recent discoveries about these tumor subtypes' distinct microstructural, metabolic, and synapse profiles to enable more comprehensive tumor...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded a $679,176 Project Grant to the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) to develop a novel and minimally invasive method to enhance the delivery of cancer therapies to spinal cord gliomas, test it in a preclinical spinal cord glioma model, and evaluate its application in large animal models. This award is funded through the Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research program (CFDA 93.394), which supports innovative scientific research to advance cancer screening,...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) awarded a $414,482 Project Grant under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech) on July 24, 2025. The goal of this 2-year project is to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of the Semliki Forest Virus (SFV), a neurotropic oncolytic virus, against glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. The project aims to adapt SFV through...
- This federal Project Grant award of $677,801, provided by the National Cancer Institute under the Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research program (CFDA 93.394), supports research at Yale University to develop a non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique called Deuterium Metabolic Imaging (DMI) for detecting and monitoring disease progression in patients with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumor. The key objectives are to: 1) validate the specificity of DMI for detecting active...
- This $3,155,815 Project Grant award from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), under the CFDA 93.394 Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research program, supports research to develop advanced magnetic resonance imaging techniques for non-invasive measurement of glutamate metabolism in glioblastoma brain tumors. The primary awardee is Brigham & Women's Hospital Inc., a subsidiary of Partners Healthcare System, which will leverage its expertise in medical research, imaging technologies, and...
- This Project Grant award from the National Cancer Institute (CFDA 93.395 - Cancer Treatment Research) provides $451,996 to the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) to develop high-throughput screening platforms for identifying and validating drugs that can target migrating and treatment-resistant glioblastoma (GBM) cancer cells. The overarching goal is to transform GBM, which is currently a fatal disease, into a more localized condition that can be effectively treated through surgery and/or...
- This federal Project Grant award from the National Cancer Institute (CFDA 93.396 - Cancer Biology Research) provides $682,596 to The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center to conduct research on the metabolic mechanisms driving glioma progression. The key research objectives are to: 1) Dissect the molecular basis for metabolic reprogramming and aberrant metabolite secretion in high-grade gliomas; 2) Determine the impact of aberrant metabolite secretion on the tumor microenvironment; and...
This federal Project Grant award of $411,583.00 from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) under the Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research program (CFDA 93.394) will support research at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech) to develop a computational model and improve understanding of the relationship between perivascular spaces and interstitial fluid flow in the context of glioma tumor invasion. The project will use advanced MRI techniques to generate dynamic imaging of interstitial transport and detailed maps of perivascular spaces in normal and tumor-bearing mouse brains. These data will be used to build and validate a whole-brain computational model of perivascular spaces and interstitial flow during tumor development. The model will also be used to examine the impact of the steroid dexamethasone, a common glioblastoma treatment, on fluid flow, perivascular spaces, and interstitial transport. The goal is to provide better insights into tumor transport and development.
