The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded Duke University $444,125 on August 13, 2026, under the Research and Training in Complementary and Integrative Health program (CFDA 93.213) to test the feasibility and acceptability of a psychological support and resource navigator program for orthopedic patients with high-impact chronic musculoskeletal pain. The navigator program addresses the gap between orthopedic patients' psychological distress and their access to pain-related psychological resources. Orthopedic clinicians often lack training in psychological assessment, feel uncomfortable discussing mental health, and face time constraints that limit patient exposure to evidence-supported interventions. The program uses an automated alert in the electronic health record to identify eligible patients, then engages them through phone, video, or in-person visits to deliver three core components: pain psychoeducation to help participants understand the relationship between psychological distress and pain; brief intervention skills such as relaxation training for daily pain self-management; and facilitation connecting patients to evidence-supported psychological resources including free online tools like PainTrainer, psychologically informed physical therapy, and counseling. Work is performed in Durham, North Carolina. The period of performance runs through July 31, 2028.
