The project, designated R01AR085602, will develop intraarticular CO-GEM formulations designed to deliver sustained carbon monoxide locally to joint tissue,...
- The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases awarded $421,367 to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences on September 1, 2026, under the Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.846) to investigate microvascular integrity and its role in osteoarthritis development. The project examines how damage to blood vessels within the joint contributes to osteoarthritis pathology, specifically testing whether mechanical stress–induced...
- The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) awarded Oregon Health & Science University $149,190 on February 13, 2026, under the Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.846) to investigate the impact of injury-associated anemia on fracture healing and test intravenous iron therapy as a treatment approach. The research addresses a gap in orthopaedic trauma management. Injury-associated anemia (hemoglobin below 12 g/dL) occurs...
- The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases awarded Ohio University $665,615 on August 15, 2026, under the Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.846) to investigate the role of a novel SIRT5 allele in osteoarthritis development. The research examines how altered SIRT5 activity in chondrocytes disrupts cellular metabolism and joint inflammation to increase osteoarthritis susceptibility. The recipient will conduct studies on a rare...
- The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases awarded $676,210 to The Washington University on August 5, 2026, under the Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.846). The recipient will conduct research into DNMT3A as an epigenetic transcriptional therapeutic target in femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) progression to osteoarthritis. FAI is a pre-arthritic hip condition affecting individuals aged 20 to 40; standard surgical treatment...
- The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases awarded Northeastern University $652,195 on June 17, 2026, under the Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.846) to develop and test surface-modified, cartilage-targeting exosomes as non-viral gene delivery vehicles for osteoarthritis treatment. The project engineers charge-reversed cationic exosomes derived from mesenchymal stem cells, anchored with arginine-rich peptide motifs, to...
- The National Institutes of Health National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases awarded Penderia Technologies Inc. $306,722 on September 19, 2025, under the Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.846) to fabricate and characterize a distal femoral fracture fixation plate featuring an implantable, battery-free wireless sensor for intra- and postoperative monitoring of fixation plate strains. The project targets personalized postoperative...
- The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases awarded The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center $613,036 on August 1, 2026, for investigator-initiated research under the Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.846). The project, "Leveraging Lymphatics to Reverse Heterotopic Ossification," addresses the pathologic formation of extra-skeletal bone occurring in approximately twenty percent of patients following hip...
- The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases awarded Syracuse University $467,076 on September 1, 2026, under the Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.846) to develop multifunctional microcarriers for immune modulation in osteoarthritis treatment. The project addresses post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) by investigating site-specific delivery of a macrophage-targeting agent via calcium-zoledronate nanoparticle-loaded microparticles...
- The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases awarded $547,767 to the University of Rochester on June 1, 2026, under the Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.846) to investigate host mechanisms governing Staphylococcus aureus persistence during implant-associated osteomyelitis. The research uses humanized mouse models and multi-omic analysis of human T cells to understand why some patients resolve acute bone infections while others...
The National Institutes of Health National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases awarded the University of Oregon $343,491 on September 1, 2026, under the Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.846) to engineer hemoglobin-based oxygen-carrying spheroids that enhance the viability and secretome activity of injectable mesenchymal stem cells in hypoxic osteoarthritis joint environments. The recipient will develop functional hemoglobin incorporated into photo-crosslinkable gelatin hydrogels with preserved heme-function through thiolated heparin molecules. The platform harnesses hemoglobin's adaptive ability to bind and release oxygen based on surrounding oxygen levels, creating a buffer system that adjusts to the diverse oxygen needs of osteoarthritis joint microenvironments. Current synthetic oxygen-generating biomaterial strategies using calcium peroxides or perfluorocarbons produce cytotoxicity and burst-release challenges causing supraphysiological conditions; alternative strategies using natural heme-proteins have failed due to rapid protein oxidization and impaired oxygen binding capacity. This work addresses the challenge that stem cell-based osteoarthritis treatments face limited cell lifespan and varying secretome activity, compounded by hypoxic conditions within diseased joints. Performance occurs in Eugene, Oregon. The period of performance runs September 1, 2026 through August 31, 2028. This is a Project Grant, the standard NIH R21 mechanism supporting exploratory high-risk, high-reward research.
