- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded the University of Alabama at Birmingham $512,842 on July 13, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to investigate how capsule O-acetyltransferases modulate pneumococcal fitness and contribute to bacterial virulence. The research focuses on characterizing the function of capsule polysaccharide O-acetyltransferase enzyme families in Streptococcus pneumoniae and their role in coordinating with...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded the University of Alabama at Birmingham $480,853 on August 1, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855, Project Grant R01AI195802) to investigate the stability and dynamics of the human anti-carbohydrate antibody repertoire across the lifespan. The research examines how chronic exposure to commensal microbiota-derived glycan determinants shapes the anti-carbohydrate (AC) B cell repertoire....
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded the University of Alabama at Birmingham $490,611 on April 3, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to investigate the role of regulatory dendritic cells in neonatal immune responses to influenza infection. The research examines how a newly identified form of dendritic cell maturation (mREGDC1) impairs protective CD8 T cell responses in newborns and young infants during respiratory viral...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded Emory University $100,228 on November 18, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855). The award funds research into autoreactive, extrafollicular B cell pathways in a TLR7-driven murine model. The project addresses gaps in understanding the origins of extrafollicular effector B cells and the system-wide and microenvironmental signaling that...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded the University of Alabama at Birmingham $409,750 on February 9, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to identify immunoregulatory metabolic signals that suppress TLR7 stimulation of lupus pathogenic B cells and to develop safer systemic lupus erythematosus therapeutics using immune-regulatory metabolites. The research aims to characterize how IL-4 induces tryptophan metabolic...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded the University of Alabama at Birmingham $1,173,450 on September 18, 2025, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to investigate the structure-function relationships of influenza non-structural protein 1 (NS1) and nuclear export protein (NEP) that govern the influenza virus lifecycle. The research will define mechanistic and structural understanding of how NS1 and NEP accomplish their viral...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded the University of California, San Diego $720,021 on February 6, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to support research on antibody interactions with M and M-like proteins of Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus). The project addresses the challenge of developing broadly protective immunization strategies against Strep A, a major global pathogen, by designing M protein-based...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Alabama at Birmingham received a $148,500 Project Grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855), awarded August 1, 2025, with a completion date of July 31, 2027. This research project investigates the role of calcium ions (Ca2+) in the assembly of the exosporium of Bacillus anthracis, the bacterium responsible for anthrax. The research focuses on...
