Project Grant R21AI193802
- Grant Award Summary The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) awarded The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center a $3.28 million Project Grant on August 21, 2025, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855). The four-year research initiative, scheduled for completion on July 31, 2029, focuses on elucidating the mechanisms by which host ubiquitin ligases and deubiquitinases regulate immune responses against Mycobacterium tuberculosis...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Massachusetts General Hospital $798,107 on February 3, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to establish a tissue-based understanding of tuberculosis-associated lung fibrosis and post-TB lung disease pathology. The project creates a baseline understanding of molecules and cells driving fibrogenesis during TB infection, with the goal of identifying adjunctive therapies to modulate tissue...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), a component of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded $824,278 to Texas Biomedical Research Institute on August 1, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) for Project Grant R01AI201766. The award funds comparative investigation of bacterial antigen presentation mechanisms in Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Francisella tularensis infections to...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded University of Massachusetts Medical School $139,968 on September 30, 2025, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to investigate the relationship between genetic variants, transcriptional responses, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection outcomes in macrophages derived from genetically diverse Collaborative Cross mice. The research explores how polymorphisms such as those in the STAT2 locus...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Texas Biomedical Research Institute $927,025 on May 11, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to evaluate IL-21-IGFC therapy for enhancing pulmonary immune reconstitution and limiting viral persistence in co-infected macaques. The research addresses incomplete immune reconstitution in individuals co-infected with HIV and tuberculosis despite antiretroviral therapy, using an established...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Baylor College of Medicine $752,172 on September 1, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to conduct a mechanistic study of an RNA translocase via integrative multi-resolution approach. The research investigates how mycobacteria persist in the host by examining a conserved bifunctional RNA helicase and nuclease enzyme found across mycobacterium species. The enzyme is thought to promote...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) awarded The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center a $1.14 million Project Grant under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) on September 11, 2025, for a five-year research initiative extending through August 31, 2030. This award funds investigator-initiated research investigating the mechanisms of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) transmission through...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center $249,000 on July 20, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855). The award funds research to develop tools for marginal zone-specific gene expression manipulation in B cells. The project investigates how mature B cell subsets—follicular, marginal zone, and B-1 cells—contribute to protective immune responses in infection and pathogenic responses...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded $1.59 million to the University of Colorado-Denver under Project Grant R01AI187511 on September 17, 2025, to support research integrating genomic architecture and tuberculosis immunity in Africa under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855). The research generates population-level genetic data (HLA, KIR, and SNP array) on 5,000 case/control samples from multi-ancestry individuals in South Africa's...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded the Trustees of Boston University $245,250 on February 9, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to study the phenotypes and genesis of arginase 1-positive myeloid cells in pulmonary tuberculosis using a genetic mouse model of chronic TB. The research uses the B6.SST1S mouse model, which develops human-like organized necrotic granulomas after aerosol, intravenous, or subcutaneous infection...
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center $281,500 on August 3, 2026, to investigate human neutralizing autoantibodies to interferon-gamma underlying mycobacterial diseases under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855). The research addresses the hypothesis that tuberculosis in some patients is caused by interferon-gamma autoantibodies with lower titer and/or lower affinity than those observed in patients with the autoimmune phenocopy of Mendelian susceptibility to mycobacterial disease (MSMD). Preliminary findings from a pilot cohort of 97 TB patients of known HLA type identified four patients with neutralizing autoantibodies to interferon-gamma at lower titers than those typically seen in MSMD cases. The project will expand characterization of the interferon-gamma autoantibody repertoire, which remains poorly understood despite being discovered two decades ago, and explore whether this autoimmune mechanism contributes to tuberculosis pathophysiology beyond the documented 1–5 percent of MSMD cases. Work is performed in Dallas, Texas. The project runs through July 31, 2028.
