The University of Arizona, under a $216,759 Project Grant (R21AI184072) from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (CFDA 93.855 - Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research), is developing a nanoemulsion-based transdermal gel formulation containing the antiretroviral drugs dolutegravir (DTG) and rilpivirine (RPV). The goal is to create a non-invasive, room temperature stable delivery system to improve long-term adherence and management of HIV infection in pediatric patients. The project involves: 1) formulating and characterizing the nanoemulsion gel containing RPV ionic liquid and DTG; 2) evaluating the pharmacokinetics of the transdermal formulation in mice; and 3) assessing the antiretroviral efficacy of the gel in a humanized mouse model of HIV infection. Successful completion of this research is expected to yield a viable pediatric HIV treatment option that can be self-administered through the transdermal route.
