This Project Grant award of $130,776.00 from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (CFDA 93.855 - Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research) supports research at Lake Forest College to characterize the function of the mycobacterial BrkB protein and its role in tuberculosis (TB) pathogenesis. The PI will identify BrkB's substrates and protein interactions, investigate the mechanism by which BrkB is required for extracellular mycobacterial growth, and measure BrkB's impact on mycobacterial growth under late-stage infection conditions. This research will serve as the foundation for a sustainable platform to empower undergraduate students to investigate mycobacterial virulence factors and host susceptibility using biochemical, microbiological, and organismal approaches. The award, which began on September 4, 2024 and is scheduled for completion by August 31, 2028, supports the development of new potential drug targets against antibiotic-resistant TB.
