This $429,016 federal Project Grant awarded by the National Eye Institute (CFDA 93.867 - Vision Research) to Oakland University supports research to identify the mechanisms by which a subset of retinal amacrine cells, called starburst amacrine cells, initiate and propagate spontaneous cholinergic waves in the developing retina. The objectives are to determine the distribution and properties of these cholinergic wave "pacemaker" cells (Aim 1) and to elucidate the calcium-dependent mechanisms by which they generate these waves (Aim 2). The research aims to advance understanding of how retinal waves mediate the vascular and neuronal development of the retina, as well as the refinement of eye-specific segregation and retinotopic maps in the visual centers of the brain. The award period is from September 1, 2023 to August 31, 2026.
