This federal Project Grant award from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865), will fund research to develop a shear wave tensiometer for noninvasively assessing in vivo muscle forces in a small animal model of volumetric muscle loss (VML). The primary objectives are to: 1) Develop a small animal tensiometer to measure reductions in muscle forces due to VML injury, and 2) Determine the effectiveness of electrically stimulated eccentric contraction (ESEC) training on improving muscle force generation following VML injury. The $303,000 grant was awarded to Saint Louis University on September 1, 2024 and will run through August 31, 2026. Successful completion of this research will validate the use of tensiometry as a non-invasive tool to measure in vivo muscle function in animal models, and demonstrate the potential of ESEC training to improve muscle function after VML injury.
