The University of Toledo Health Science Campus Division was awarded a $156,250 Project Grant (R03ES036303) from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (CFDA 93.113 Environmental Health) to investigate the role of the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex in the response of melanocytes to ultraviolet radiation exposure. The goal is to determine how the loss of the BRG1 subunit of the SWI/SNF complex impacts gene expression and chromatin structure, and how this disrupts the normal photo-protective response in melanocytes, potentially exacerbating the inflammatory and other detrimental effects of UV radiation exposure. This 2-year research study, running from December 2024 to November 2026, represents the first in vivo investigation of the epigenetic consequences of BRG1 loss in UV-exposed melanocytes and its implications for the development of cutaneous malignant melanoma.
