The University of Illinois, through its contract with the National Cancer Institute (CFDA 93.396 - Cancer Biology Research), is developing novel human-relevant lung adenocarcinoma models to better understand the initiation, progression, and composition of primary human lung tumors. Specifically, the university will 1) introduce oncogenic mutations into primary human lung stem and progenitor cells to generate tumor organoid models amenable for high-throughput drug testing, and 2) xenograft the mutated stem/progenitor populations into mouse lungs to create in vivo models. These models will undergo histopathological and single-cell transcriptomic analyses to characterize the tumor cell states and the role of cell of origin in determining tumor characteristics. The total funding for this 2-year project grant is $160,330, with an award date of December 1, 2024.
