The National Institute on Aging (NIA), under the Aging Research Federal Grant Program (CFDA 93.866), awarded a $310,120 project grant to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) to conduct foundational research for developing a novel emergency department-based intervention to address inappropriate aspirin use among older adults. The project aims to: 1) determine the frequency of counseling on the benefits and risks of chronic aspirin use within 14 days after an emergency department visit for bleeding; 2a) identify patient and provider factors associated with the absence of such counseling; and 2b) qualitatively understand patients' decision-making process in continuing or discontinuing aspirin use after a bleeding event. This research will inform the development of a paradigm-shifting intervention to facilitate supervised aspirin deprescribing after emergency department encounters for bleeding in older adults.
