The $403,806 R01NS138176 project grant awarded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853) supports the development and application of a new reversible fluorescent sensor technology called SynapShot. This approach enables real-time mapping and visualization of neuronal connectivity and synaptic dynamics in local and long-range brain circuits, both in vitro and in vivo. Planned research activities include investigating the functional implications of synaptic labeling, exploring inhibitory synaptic connections, and observing synaptic changes during learning tasks to advance understanding of neural circuit structure and function. The Johns Hopkins University, the grant recipient, will leverage this fluorescent sensor platform to contribute valuable insights into the relationship between synaptic structure, brain processes, and neurological disorders over the project period from August 2024 to June 2029.
