The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) was awarded a $467,602 Project Grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853) federal grant program. The funding will support research to investigate the role of the protein dystrophin and the dystrophin glycoprotein complex in the maturation of inhibitory synapses in the brain, particularly in the cerebellar Purkinje cells. The research aims to determine how dystrophin deficiency, as seen in Duchenne muscular dystrophy, impacts inhibitory synapse development and function, as well as whether enhancing GABA receptor activity can rescue this synaptic maturation process. Findings from this 5-year project are expected to provide critical insights into the mechanisms underlying neurodevelopmental disorders associated with dystrophin deficiency.
