The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) awarded a 5-year, $666,728 Project Grant (CFDA 93.853 - Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders) to The Washington University in St. Louis to conduct a comprehensive study on the molecular and cellular characteristics of congenital hydrocephalus. The research team aims to establish a large, diverse patient cohort with a focus on non-European populations, and leverage genomics, neuroimaging, and bioinformatics to identify germline and somatic variants associated with this neurological condition. The project also involves subrecipient awards to Massachusetts General Hospital and Yale University to support patient recruitment, genomic analyses, and development of a data visualization platform. This multi-institutional collaboration seeks to enhance diagnostic accuracy, uncover genotype-phenotype correlations, and provide a better understanding of the underlying genetic and cellular mechanisms of congenital hydrocephalus.
