The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) awarded a $857,060 Project Grant (CFDA 93.242) to Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, to study the social-ecological and individual factors associated with the course of suicidal ideation and attempts among African American youth from early adolescence to young adulthood. The 3-year project aims to: 1) identify trajectories of suicidal behavior during this developmental period, 2) determine risk and protective factors during childhood, adolescence, and emerging adulthood that influence these trajectories, and 3) examine how individual and environmental factors impact transitions in suicidal behavior over time. The award leverages longitudinal data collected on a cohort of 630 Black youth in Baltimore over 20 years. Two sub-grants were awarded to The Johns Hopkins University and New York University to support specific aspects of the research.
