- The National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities awarded Case Western Reserve University $241,500 on September 1, 2026, under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program (CFDA 93.307) to develop novel theoretical models and methods for reducing socioeconomic disparities in tobacco use. The award funds two primary aims. Aim 1 uses community-based system dynamics to identify key leverage points for intervention by developing a feedback theory of smoking and...
- The National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities awarded Research Institute At Nationwide Children's Hospital $446,046 on July 1, 2026, under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program (CFDA 93.307) to increase ultrasound utilization for diagnosis of abdominal pain in rural children. The research addresses disparities in diagnostic imaging access among the 13 million children living in rural areas, where computed tomography is overused due to limited...
- The National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded Ochin, Inc. a Project Grant of $1,460,161 on August 15, 2026, under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program (CFDA 93.307). - The National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health within the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded $403,686 to Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University on April 7, 2026, under the Cancer Cause and Prevention Research program (CFDA 93.393) to identify cyclin-dependent kinase 10 (CDK10) as a driver of triple negative breast cancer aggressiveness and to evaluate it as a therapeutic target. The project addresses disparities in...
- The National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded The Johns Hopkins University $311,000 under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program (CFDA 93.307) on August 17, 2026. The award funds a 20-year retrospective analysis of opioid-involved overdose deaths (OODS) with focus on racial and ethnic health disparities. The research examines OODS trends from 2005 to 2024 across...
- The National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities awarded H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute Hospital, Inc. $811,939 on August 4, 2026, under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program (CFDA 93.307) to investigate accelerated aging biomarkers in cancer patients with HIV. The award funds prospective identification and molecular analysis of 500 cancer patients—250 with HIV and 250 without HIV—recruited from Moffitt Cancer Center, plus 250 people...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded The Ohio State University $386,888 under CFDA 93.395 (Cancer Treatment Research) on July 2, 2026, to characterize mechanisms by which members of the bacterial family Lachnospiraceae affect response to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) in cancer treatment. The project builds on prior dietary intervention clinical trials and fecal microbiota transplantation studies showing that microbiome modification can improve ICB response rates. Initial work demonstrated...
The National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities awarded The Ohio State University $775,836 on August 5, 2026, under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program (CFDA 93.307) to modernize gynecologic cancer clinical trial eligibility criteria and increase enrollment among racial and ethnic minority patients. The project will examine how broadening gynecologic cancer clinical trial exclusion criteria affects the racial and ethnic composition of trial-eligible populations and survival outcomes. Prior work by the recipient demonstrated that Asian, Black, and Hispanic gynecologic cancer patients enrolled in clinical trials at lower rates than other populations, despite showing improved overall survival when enrolled. The project will develop simulation data to forecast how relaxing specific exclusion criteria influences clinical trial generalizability and enrollment disparities, providing empirical evidence to guide trial design decisions when national cancer organizations have called for broadening eligibility but lack data to support which restrictions to modify. Work is performed in Columbus, Ohio. The period of performance runs through December 31, 2030. This is a Project Grant, the assistance type under which the NIH funds investigator-initiated research.
