This federal Project Grant award of $1,274,936 from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Trans-NIH Research Support program (CFDA 93.310) aims to address the epidemic of health misinformation, particularly in marginalized communities. The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) and the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health (AAIUH) have partnered to create the Community Health Information and Education Forum (CHIEF) initiative.

CHIEF will develop a technology platform with two key components: 1) a message mapping dashboard for community-based organizations to create, deploy, and measure health information campaigns, and 2) a mobile health bulletin board app for barbers and stylists to easily share vetted, reliable health infographics with their clients. The health messages will be developed by graduate students and vetted by faculty experts. This project also aims to expose underrepresented minority high school students to public health research careers through the Health Sciences Academy program. By leveraging trusted community influencers, this initiative seeks to combat the spread of health misinformation and promote equitable health outcomes in Brooklyn, New York. The project will run from September 2024 through May 2029.
