The University of Illinois received a $1,626,470 Project Grant award from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (CFDA 93.307 Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program) to conduct a 5-year longitudinal study examining contextual factors and protective determinants related to racial/ethnic health disparities among Black and Hispanic preschool children with developmental delays and disabilities. The study aims to: 1) assess how structural racism and discrimination in educational, healthcare, and neighborhood environments impact access to therapeutic services and multilevel outcomes for these children and their families; and 2) identify modifiable protective factors that may mitigate these disparities. The research will enroll 300 children across Chicago and collect prospective data over 3 years. The findings are expected to inform policy and the development of interventions to promote health equity for Black and Hispanic children with developmental delays and their families.
