Project Grant R01HL184552
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Emory University $651,762 on September 1, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to conduct the RECHARGE: Imaging Ancillary Study, a noninvasive coronary imaging investigation nested within two ongoing PCORI-funded randomized controlled trials (RECHARGE:WOMEN and RECHARGE:MINORITIES). The study will leverage 600 women and 600 Black or Hispanic patients enrolled across 100 sites in the United States and Canada...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Weill Medical College of Cornell University $818,022 on August 25, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to characterize endothelin-1 (ET-1) and its receptor (ET-RA) as cardiomyocyte proliferation inhibitors in neonatal mice. The research aims to identify mechanisms by which extracellular inhibitory factors suppress heart cell proliferation, with the long-term goal of enabling therapeutic strategies to...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Weill Medical College of Cornell University $1,657,587 on July 15, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to dissect molecular pathways controlling human pacemaker development. The recipient will conduct research aimed at identifying key transcriptional regulators of sinoatrial node (SAN) differentiation using CRISPR interference and activation in human pluripotent stem cells, then validate findings in...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Weill Medical College of Cornell University $704,851 on August 15, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to develop cardiac magnetic resonance tissue characterization methods for prognostication and therapeutic response prediction in functional tricuspid regurgitation. The project leverages newly developed CMR techniques optimized for the thin-walled right ventricle, including high-resolution 3D navigator late...
- The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute awarded Weill Medical College of Cornell University $936,356 under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) on June 15, 2026, for the PE-TRACT Extend Study, a prospective cohort investigation of chronic thromboembolic disease following intermediate-risk pulmonary embolism treatment. The study extends the NHLBI-funded PE-TRACT randomized trial of catheter-directed therapy for acute PE by following the parent study population beyond the...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Weill Medical College of Cornell University $768,414 on August 5, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to conduct multi-omic profiling research examining the relationship between idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and cardiovascular disease. The research identifies shared molecular mechanisms linking pulmonary fibrosis and cardiovascular disease through blood-based and tissue analysis. The project defines shared...
- Federal Cooperative Agreement Award Summary Weill Medical College of Cornell University received a $1,048,249 Cooperative Agreement from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837), awarded September 15, 2025, with an ultimate completion date of August 31, 2026. The award supports ROMA:Women (Randomized Comparison of the Outcomes of Single vs Multiple Arterial Grafts Trial in Women), a dedicated cardiac surgery clinical...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Weill Medical College of Cornell University $100,805 on August 17, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to develop translational extended reality (XR) and artificial intelligence technologies integrated with dynamic soft robotic hearts for immersive clinical training and intraoperative guidance in interventional cardiology. The project addresses critical limitations in structural heart intervention procedures...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Weill Medical College of Cornell University $1,541,783 on September 15, 2025, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to investigate novel roles of the thrombin receptor protease-activated receptor-1 (PAR1) in lung lymphatic function and acute respiratory distress syndrome. The research uses mouse models to examine PAR1's role in button junction formation during lung injury. The work identifies how...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Weill Medical College of Cornell University $816,853 under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) on August 14, 2026, to investigate the role of endothelial ceramides in coronary atherosclerosis development and progression. The research tests the hypothesis that very long chain ceramides protect against coronary atherosclerosis by preserving endothelial cell resilience to atherogenic stressors through KLF2 expression....
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Weill Medical College of Cornell University $863,551 on September 1, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to improve external validity of the RECHARGE trial through a partially randomized patient preference framework. The RECHARGE program comprises two integrated multicenter randomized trials—RECHARGE:WOMEN and RECHARGE:MINORITIES—that compare percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) versus coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in women and Black or Hispanic patients with multivessel coronary artery disease. The trials will enroll approximately 1,200 patients across up to 100 sites, with a hierarchical composite primary endpoint of death and time-averaged change in generic quality of life. The funded project addresses a critical feasibility challenge: during RECHARGE's pilot phase, 80 percent of eligible patients declined randomization due to strong treatment preferences. The grant funds integration of a partially randomized patient preference cohort framework to enroll these preference-driven patients in a parallel observational arm within a unified analytic design, thereby enhancing generalizability and evaluating the feasibility of incorporating preference cohorts in cardiovascular randomized controlled trials. This approach has not previously been deployed in coronary revascularization research. Period of performance runs through May 31, 2031. Work is performed at Weill Medical College's location in New York, New York.
