The Washington University Office of Sponsored Research Services has been awarded a $740,317 Project Grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research Program (CFDA 93.837). The objective of this grant is to conduct research focused on understanding the regulation of alveolar development in the lung, particularly the mechanisms by which fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling pathways control primary and secondary alveologenesis. The research aims to identify novel transcriptional regulators of myofibroblast function during alveolar septation, as well as the cellular mechanisms by which FGF signaling influences septal wall maturation. This work is expected to provide insights into the pathogenic mechanisms underlying bronchopulmonary dysplasia and potentially inform the development of therapies to promote lung maturation and regeneration. The grant period runs from January 29, 2025 through November 30, 2028.
