This federal Project Grant award from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (CFDA 93.865 - Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research) provides $693,751 to the Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital to conduct a hybrid randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness and implementation of a smartphone application, Drive Ready Venture (DRV), in improving driving safety among novice teen drivers. The project aims to (1) determine the effectiveness of the DRV app intervention in improving driving safety scores among novice teen drivers, and (2) identify contextual factors associated with the adoption and implementation of the DRV app intervention. The 5-year study will randomize 465 novice teen drivers and their parents to receive either the DRV app only, the DRV app plus parent engagement, or an active control (sham DRV app). The researchers hypothesize that teens in the DRV-only and DRV plus parent engagement groups will demonstrate higher driving safety scores compared to controls.
