The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) awarded a $672,498 Project Grant (CFDA 93.865) to the Regents of the University of Minnesota, Office of Sponsored Projects Administration, to conduct a 5-year study on "Estimating Impacts of Social Safety Net Generosity on Neglect and Physical Abuse in Young Children".
The key objectives of this research project are to: 1) Estimate the impacts of major social safety net programs (e.g. EITC, CTC, SNAP/WIC) on both child protective services reports and injuries related to neglect and physical abuse in young children, accounting for policy interactions; and 2) Utilize a safety net benefits calculator and combine over 300 state-years of data on maltreatment-related pediatric injuries to address limitations in prior research. The project will focus on young children aged 0-5 and aims to provide insights for population-level maltreatment prevention policies. The Brookings Institution and University of California, Berkeley have been awarded sub-grants to support this multi-institution research collaboration.
