This $588,325 project grant awarded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD, CFDA 93.865 Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research) to Emory University supports the development and evaluation of a primary prevention intervention for intimate partner violence (IPV) among newly married couples in India.
The grant supports a cluster randomized trial to assess the impact of the "Ghya Bharaari Ekatra" (GBE) intervention on preventing IPV, enhancing reproductive autonomy among women, and improving mental health for both members of the dyad. The GBE intervention is a theory-driven, dyadic program delivered by lay peer educators over 6 weekly sessions to address key determinants of IPV, including relationship quality, self-esteem, communication, and gender norms. The study also aims to identify barriers, facilitators, and strategies for future scale-up of the GBE intervention in similar resource-limited settings.
