This $718,397 federal Project Grant award from the National Eye Institute (NEI) Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867) aims to improve health equity and access to technologies for better diabetic retinopathy (DR) outcomes. The "HEALTH EQUITY AND ACCESS TO LEVERAGE TECHNOLOGY FOR IMPROVED DIABETIC RETINOPATHY OUTCOMES (HEAL-DR)" project will leverage the Sight Outcomes Research Collaborative (SOURCE) database to model optical coherence tomography (OCT) data and develop risk assessment models to better identify minority populations at high risk for undetected or worsening DR. The goal is to enhance screening and treatment guidelines to prevent vision loss from this condition, which disproportionately impacts ethnic minority groups. The project includes a $69,014 sub-award to the University of Michigan to support the data analysis and modeling work. Overall, this research seeks to address disparities in DR care and outcomes through innovative use of technology and population-level data.
