Yale University has been awarded a $737,299 Project Grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) under the Environmental Health (CFDA 93.113) program. The grant will support a study titled "Environmental Chemical Exposures and Biologic Markers for Cerebral Palsy (EXPOSE CP)" over a period of 5 years from May 2024 to February 2029. The project aims to investigate the effects of prenatal exposure to chemicals such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and pesticides on the risk of developing cerebral palsy. The research will leverage unique environmental and biorepository resources in California to analyze maternal serum and newborn dried blood samples to identify exposure biomarkers and their association with cerebral palsy. Additionally, the study will examine the impact of maternal thyroid hormone levels on fetal neurodevelopment and cerebral palsy risk. The findings from this comprehensive study are expected to provide critical insights into the environmental etiologies of cerebral palsy and inform future prevention strategies.
