This $327,323 federal Project Grant award from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (CFDA Program 93.286 - Discovery and Applied Research for Technological Innovations to Improve Human Health) is supporting the development of an innovative device called OXYTRACK for on-site monitoring of tissue oxygen levels (pO2) in clinical settings. The OXYTRACK system includes a miniaturized, needle-shaped electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) probe that can be used directly on patients without requiring them to be transported to a specialized EPR facility. The project aims to construct this self-contained EPR sensor and an accompanying compact EPR spectrometer based on software-defined radio technology. The goals are to assess the efficacy, reliability, and safety of the OXYTRACK system through tissue models and animal studies, validating its performance against existing oximetry methods. A subaward to Technion Research & Development Foundation in Israel will contribute to the project. If successful, the OXYTRACK oxygen monitoring system could become a valuable clinical tool for conditions where tissue oxygen levels are critical for prognosis and treatment decisions.
