The University of Pittsburgh received a $650,004 Project Grant award from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) through the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The goal of this 5-year research project is to identify mechanisms the kidney uses to regulate magnesium reabsorption, particularly during periods of increased magnesium demands like lactation. The study will examine the role of the parathyroid hormone receptor, cell proliferation in the distal convoluted tubule, the magnesium channel TRPM6, and the signaling pathway involving the glycoprotein MUC1 and EGFR. Insights from this research could lead to interventions to improve magnesium balance and bone health. The University may collaborate with sub-awardees as part of this comprehensive investigation into renal magnesium handling.
