Project Grant R01DC022608
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders awarded Purdue University $159,116 on September 30, 2025, under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) to investigate patterns of speech perception and production abilities among late-talking children and whether these skills predict later phonological development and speech-sound disorder. The project examines a large cohort of both late talkers and typical talkers at ages three...
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders awarded the University of Pittsburgh $664,448 on September 1, 2026, under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173). The award funds investigation of how heterogeneous neural responses in auditory cortex and secondary motor cortex contribute to auditory learning and perception. The project combines large-scale neural recordings with optogenetic manipulations to examine how local auditory...
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders awarded Purdue University $210,050 on August 4, 2026, under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) to develop and validate a novel device that reduces stuttering through machine learning–controlled altered auditory feedback modulated by the user's real-time brain activity. The research combines experimental and engineering work to establish the foundation for a device that delivers...
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders awarded the University of Pittsburgh $605,903 on September 1, 2026, under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) to investigate neural mechanisms of voice-based social perception in the human brain. The research maps information flow across the auditory ventral stream to understand how the brain extracts social-emotional dimensions—such as identity, emotion, and gender—from voice...
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) awarded the University of Illinois $139,102 on July 10, 2026, under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) to facilitate spoken morphology development in children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The award funds research examining factors that facilitate morphology learning in deaf and hard-of-hearing children using artificial grammar learning paradigms (Aims 1 and 2) and...
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders awarded Purdue University $450,000 on August 15, 2026, under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) to develop a cross-species knowledgebase for precision auditory neuroscience and audiology. Purdue will build a community-driven, standards-based knowledgebase that establishes data standards and ontologies to harmonize cross-species hearing research data and create predictive models...
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, a division of the National Institutes of Health under the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded Father Flanagan's Boys' Home $350,000 on July 8, 2026, under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859). The award funds research to develop and validate an assessment tool for measuring variability in acoustic access to speech cues across frequency bands in cochlear implant users. The recipient...
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders awarded Northeastern University $197,000 on May 1, 2026, under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) to investigate clinical phenotypes of feedback and feedforward control in adults who stutter. The research tests two hypotheses: that distinct stuttering behaviors are associated with behavioral and neural correlates of feedback and feedforward control (Aim 1), and that distinct...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Purdue University received a $431,750 Project Grant award from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173), effective September 5, 2025, through August 31, 2027. The project, titled "Building Vocabulary Networks," will deliver research services focused on understanding early language development and vocabulary acquisition in toddlers,...
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded $132,695 to the University of Maryland, College Park on July 1, 2026, under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) to develop artificial intelligence methods for delivering vocal tract gesture biofeedback in speech sound disorder therapy for children. The work spans two phases through June...
The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders awarded Purdue University $504,483 on September 1, 2026, under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) to characterize developmental trajectories that predict persistence or recovery from speech sound disorder in children. The project recruits a large cohort of children with diverse speech abilities at age four and follows them annually through age seven to identify predictive factors across three domains: phonological processing, speech production, and language skills. Using longitudinal predictive modeling, the research team will test variables from each domain to identify subsets of measures that best predict risk of persistent speech sound disorder, enabling clinicians to better identify preschoolers likely to persist with speech sound disorder in school years and support development of more efficacious speech therapy interventions. Performance occurs in West Lafayette, Indiana. The award carries a period of performance from September 1, 2026, through May 31, 2031. This is a Project Grant, the largest category of funding through NIDCD, supporting basic and applied research across universities, medical schools, and research institutes with funds for salaries, equipment, supplies, travel, and allowable direct and indirect costs.
