This Project Grant awarded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) under the Cancer Cause and Prevention Research program (CFDA 93.393) provides $713,235 in funding to the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute Hospital, Inc. to conduct a randomized controlled trial (RCT) evaluating the efficacy of the MIND diet for improving cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) in breast cancer survivors.
The RCT will enroll 200 breast cancer survivors who have completed treatment within the past 3 years and are experiencing CRCI, randomizing them to receive either the MIND diet or their usual diet for a 12-week feeding trial. The study will assess self-reported cognitive functioning, neurocognitive test performance, and ecological momentary assessment of cognitive function as primary and secondary outcomes. Biological measures including inflammation and nutrient biomarkers will also be examined. The study aims to determine if the MIND diet, which is high in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant nutrients, can improve cognitive outcomes in this population experiencing a significant and persistent treatment-related side effect.
