The National Cancer Institute (NCI) awarded a $1,623,261 Project Grant (CFDA 93.393 - Cancer Cause and Prevention Research) to Case Western Reserve University to conduct a clinical trial testing two novel approaches to reduce mortality from esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC).
The first aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of a non-endoscopic, biomarker-based technology to detect Barrett's esophagus (BE), the precursor to EAC, in a population without gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms. The second aim is to refine and validate a DNA sequencing and AI analysis method, dubbed "BAD", to enable early detection and monitoring of BE progression to high-grade dysplasia and EAC. This research seeks to improve upon current endoscopic screening methods by providing a less invasive, more sensitive approach to detecting and managing BE before it progresses to lethal EAC.
The five-year project is being conducted by the Case Western Reserve University Office of Research Administration Division, in affiliation with University Hospitals of Cleveland, and is scheduled for completion by December 31, 2029.
