The University of California Irvine (UC Irvine) was awarded a $501,606 Project Grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) under the Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research program (CFDA 93.394). The funding will support the development and characterization of a vascularized microphysiological system (MPS) platform to model peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC), which is a deadly form of colorectal and gastric cancer metastasis. The project aims to:

  1. Characterize the dual-tissue MPS platform to accurately model PC, 2) Correlate the in vitro MPS performance to clinical data from a prospective study, and 3) Test drug sensitivities of PC tumors using the MPS. This research is intended to help identify improved therapies for PC, which currently has limited treatment options and poor patient survival rates. The 5-year project will leverage UC Irvine's expertise in tissue engineering, cancer biology, and drug discovery to advance the development of this biomimetic MPS technology for cancer research.
