The National Cancer Institute (NCI), through its Cancer Biology Research program (CFDA 93.396), awarded a $719,799 Project Grant to Health Research, Inc. for the period of Jan 1, 2025 to Dec 31, 2029. The grant will support research to investigate the impact of metabolic adaptations on the tumor microenvironment and immune escape mechanisms in metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC).
The key objectives are to elucidate the bifunctional mechanisms by which the metabolic enzyme PFKFB4 regulates metabolic and genetic plasticity in the hypoxic tumor microenvironment, and how this promotes the selection of metastatic clones. The project will also interrogate the impact of PFKFB4-dependent tumor metabolic adaptations on the immune tumor microenvironment and identify mechanisms of immunosuppression and T cell dysfunction that enable tumor immune escape. This research aims to uncover novel mechanisms in the hostile tumor microenvironment that drive metastatic progression of TNBC.
