The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) awarded a $361,650 Project Grant (CFDA 93.846 - Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research) to Trustees of Boston University to conduct research aimed at elucidating the mechanisms by which bacterial infections impair lymphatic vessel function and exploring interventions to restore lymphatic contractility and immune function. The research project, titled "Enhancing Immunity by Protecting Lymphatic Muscle Cells from MRSA-Induced Dysfunction", will use lineage tracing, single-cell RNA sequencing, and calcium imaging studies to investigate how bacterial infections, including MRSA, impact the function of lymphatic muscle cells and overall lymphatic vessel contractility. The project also seeks to test whether pharmacological inhibitors of bacterial virulence can preserve lymphatic contractility and promote the expansion of bacteria-specific T cells to provide protection against subsequent infections. Additionally, through the Boston University Education, Advising and Mentoring in STEM-Medicine (BEAMS) program, the grant will fund a summer research experience for historically underrepresented minority high school students to foster their scientific literacy and readiness for college-level science courses.
