This Project Grant award from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), under the Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.846), will fund a $468,769 preclinical study at Washington University to identify optimal physical therapy and biological intervention strategies for reducing post-traumatic joint contracture (PTJC).
The key objectives are to: 1) Determine the ideal parameters of active physical therapy protocols (e.g. initiation, duration, intensity) to maximize range of motion and joint healing after injury, leveraging machine learning analysis of joint tissue responses; and 2) Develop anti-inflammatory and T-cell modulation strategies to complement physical therapy in mitigating PTJC development, again utilizing advanced data analytics. The 5-year project aims to elucidate fundamental principles of combined physical and biological interventions that can guide future clinical treatment of PTJC, a debilitating condition commonly occurring after joint injuries.
