The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), an institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), awarded a $873,716 Project Grant (CFDA 93.855 - Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research) to Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) on March 1, 2025. The grant, titled "CARE, REVIEW, ASSESSMENT AND FEEDBACK TOOL IN ACUTE RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS (CRAFT-IAR)," aims to adapt and evaluate an intervention that provides automated feedback on patient outcomes and clinical prescribing processes to improve antibiotic prescribing for acute upper respiratory infections in urgent outpatient care settings. The project will be conducted across 31 emergency departments, retail clinics, and walk-in clinics within a single non-VA healthcare system in Middle Tennessee, and will include the implementation of electronic clinical decision support. The 5-year project seeks to engage clinicians, refine the CRAFT intervention, and examine its effectiveness in reducing unnecessary antibiotic prescribing compared to usual care antimicrobial stewardship approaches.
