The University of Utah's Office of Sponsored Projects has been awarded a $605,072 Project Grant from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) under the Aging Research (CFDA 93.866) federal grant program. The purpose of this 5-year project is to develop and validate an inclusive measure of financial hardship for people living with Alzheimer's disease or related dementias (AD/ADRD) and their care contributors, with a focus on the unique needs of sexual and gender minority (SGM) older adults. This instrument, called the Inclusive Screener for AD/ADRD Financial Expenses (I-SAFE), will help identify financial challenges faced by SGM and non-SGM individuals with AD/ADRD and their care networks. By creating a more comprehensive assessment tool, this project aims to lay the groundwork for future interventions to address financial and health disparities among these populations as the number of older adults with AD/ADRD continues to grow. The award is effective from August 2024 through June 2029.
