The National Institute on Aging (NIA) awarded the University of Texas at Austin a $791,719 Project Grant under the Aging Research federal grant program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate the interaction between depression, age, and episodic memory impairment in racially diverse adults. The 5-year project aims to identify the neural mechanisms underlying depression-related memory deficits, including how factors like age of depression onset, chronicity, and race/ethnicity may contribute. The research will leverage cognitive neuroscience and clinical neuropsychology approaches, including functional MRI, memory tasks manipulating executive functions, and longitudinal clinical/cognitive assessments. Findings may inform personalized brain stimulation or lifestyle interventions to mitigate depression-related cognitive impairment in older adults.
