The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) awarded a $374,081 Project Grant under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). The goal of this 5-year project is to define the interaction among superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1), adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK), and catalase in modulating liver injury induced by ethanol exposure. The research will also examine the link between alcohol-associated liver disease and adipose tissue dysfunction, and assess the efficacy of a novel SOD1-targeted nanoparticle therapy in ameliorating these alcohol-related effects. The project will employ genetic, molecular, and pharmacological approaches to investigate the protective mechanisms of SOD1 against alcoholic liver disease, with the aim of developing new therapies. UNMC, as the prime awardee, will conduct the research activities at its facilities in Omaha, Nebraska.
