This $1.4 million project grant from the Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration Formula Grants for Rural Areas and Tribal Transit Program (CFDA 20.509) supports public transportation services in rural areas of Puerto Rico through September 2026. The Puerto Rico Highway and Transportation Authority will oversee operating assistance, preventative maintenance, drug and alcohol testing, project administration, and state administration activities for five municipalities. Sub-awards will provide $281,550 to Coamo Municipality, $213,696 to Comerio Municipality, $221,772 to Jayuya Municipality, $99,008 to Orocovis Municipality, and $76,977 to Vieques Municipality for operating assistance to support route expansions and job creation. Preventative maintenance funding of $61,887, $67,936, and $72,764 will go to Comerio, Orocovis, and Jayuya respectively. The grant also includes $98k for rural transit assistance program activities and $222k for state administration to support program staff and equipment purchases below $5,000 each.
