This $906,585 Project Grant from the Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration Public Transportation Emergency Relief Program (CFDA 20.527) will fund the replacement of the telephone communication system for Puerto Rico's Tren Urbano heavy rail system. The current system was damaged by Hurricane Maria and requires permanent repair beyond the initial 270-day disaster declaration period. The telephone system is critical infrastructure that provides voice communications between stations and the operations control center, as well as connectivity to emergency phones and information phones used by passengers. As the sub-awardee, the Puerto Rico Highway and Transportation Authority will replace the distributed Siemens Hicom 300E system, consisting of central and local servers at stations. The new system must be procured following the sub-awardee's third-party contracting policies. Completion is expected by March 30, 2024 to restore this important public transit function in support of the Emergency Relief Program's goals.
