The National Park Service (NPS) awarded $513,900 in federal funding on September 24, 2025, under the Battlefield Land Acquisition Grants program (CFDA 15.928) to the State of North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources to acquire and preserve the 89.15-acre Langston Tract at Bentonville Battlefield. The American Battlefield Trust served as subrecipient and has acquired the property. This acquisition represents the core deliverable—permanent protection of historically significant Civil War battlefield land through fee-simple acquisition, contingent upon a dollar-for-dollar non-federal match from the applicant and partner organizations.
To ensure long-term preservation, the award requires execution of a Preservation Letter of Agreement (PLA) that restricts use, development, and conversion of the property while guaranteeing public access. The North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources will hold the conservation easement to enforce these permanent protections. The project completion date is September 30, 2028. This acquisition aligns with the program's core mission of enabling states and local communities to permanently protect threatened battlefield lands identified in the 1993 Civil War Sites Advisory Commission report and the 2007 Revolutionary War and War of 1812 preservation study.
