This federal Project Grant award of $749,200 was provided by the Department of the Interior's National Park Service through its Historic Preservation Fund Grants-In-Aid program (CFDA 15.904). The grant was awarded to the non-profit Americus-Sumter County Movement Remembered Committee to support installation of new electrical and HVAC systems, and interior repairs to the historic Americus Colored Hospital building in Americus, Georgia. This 3-year grant project will preserve and interpret the site's history as a medical facility that served the African American community from 1923 to 1953, and its role in the broader civil rights movement. Previous grants to the organization have also funded restoration and rehabilitation of the building to enable it to serve as a clinic, exhibit space, meeting rooms, and art gallery highlighting the African American struggle for equal rights.
