The Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration Bureau of Health Professionals awarded the University of Utah $749,641 on August 1, 2026, under the Rural Health Research Centers program (CFDA 93.155) to establish a new rural track program in family medicine. The University of Utah's Family Medicine Residency in Salt Lake City will partner with Ashley Regional Medical Center in Vernal, Utah to create a rural track program that expands the existing residency by two residents per year. The program will train full-spectrum family physicians, including comprehensive maternity care, with the goal of preparing graduates to practice in rural Utah. Currently, Utah has no family medicine rural track program and no rural residency programs in family medicine or any other specialty. The program addresses significant health care workforce shortages in rural Utah; 25 of Utah's 29 counties are rural, and 12 are frontier. The Uintah Basin region served by Ashley Regional Medical Center—comprising Uintah, Duchesne, and Daggett counties—is entirely rural and designated as primary care, mental health, and maternity care health professional shortage areas. Ashley Regional Medical Center, a sole community hospital, serves approximately 60,000 residents across the Uintah Basin. Performance occurs in Utah with a period of performance from August 1, 2026, through July 31, 2029. This is a project grant assistance type.
