Project Grant NA24NMFX454G0015
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded a $796,133 Project Grant under the Fisheries Disaster Relief program (CFDA 11.477) to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) for a collaborative research project to optimize restorative breeding and develop genetically superior scallop stocks to facilitate the recovery of bay scallop populations in the Peconic Estuary. The research project, to be conducted by Stony Brook University and Cornell...
- This $449,750 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) supports research on the impacts of climate warming on the Atlantic bay scallop, a commercially and culturally important coastal species. The key research activities include: Analyzing 75 years of fisheries data and temperature records to assess how warming temperatures have contributed to the 90% decline of bay scallops across the U.S. Atlantic coast over recent decades....
- This Cooperative Agreement award of $1,133,554 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Ocean Acidification Program (CFDA 11.017) aims to enhance the adaptive capacity of the Atlantic sea scallop fishery to ocean acidification. The five-year project, running from September 2025 to August 2028, will integrate oceanographic modeling, industry engagement, and socio-economic research to develop actionable adaptation strategies. Key objectives include developing seasonal...
- This federal Project Grant award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Fisheries Development and Utilization Research and Development Grants and Cooperative Agreements Program (CFDA 11.427) seeks to develop a viable business model for culturing Atlantic sea scallops offshore in the Gulf of Maine. The $497,723 grant, awarded on February 1, 2025, will fund research to determine optimal locations, densities, and gear types for bottom scallop culture; develop an...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Sea Grant Support program (CFDA 11.417) aims to better understand growth patterns and business-level decision-making within the U.S. shellfish aquaculture industry. The $892,096 project, running from September 1, 2025 to August 31, 2028, will focus on the states of Massachusetts, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, and Washington, which represent an estimated 70% of U.S. farmed...
- This two-year, $599,998 project grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration under the Fisheries Development and Utilization Research and Development Grants and Cooperative Agreements Program (CFDA 11.427) will examine the reproductive output of softshell clams in three regions of the Maine coast. The Downeast Institute For Applied Marine Research and Education, Inc. will measure spatial and temporal variability in reproductive output for softshell clams of varying sizes placed...
- This $406,199 Cooperative Agreement award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Sea Grant Support program (CFDA 11.417) will fund a project to study lobster populations along the outer Cape Cod area. Scientists and fishermen will collaborate to collect detailed data on juvenile and adult lobsters, including their size, sex, presence of eggs, and water temperature. This data will be used to develop computer models that predict the timing and location of lobster...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Sea Grant Support program (CFDA 11.417) provides $283,407 to the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve to conduct field-based studies on the nutritional condition and feeding behaviors of American lobsters. The research aims to better understand how factors such as diet, predation, and competition impact the energy available for lobster growth and reproduction, which is critical for...
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded a $669,936 Project Grant to the Downeast Institute for Applied Marine Research and Education, Inc. (DEI) under the Congressionally Identified Awards and Projects program (CFDA 11.469). This funding supports DEI's marine research activities focused on enhancing fisheries production through sustaining wild shellfish harvests and developing new shellfish aquaculture opportunities. Specifically, the grant enables DEI to increase...
- This federal Cooperative Agreement award of $289,627 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Sea Grant Support program (CFDA 11.417) supports the Department of Marine Resources Maine (DMR) in understanding the growth and environmental effects on American lobster (Homarus americanus) populations. The project, titled "Recruitment Building Blocks: Understanding American Lobster (Homarus americanus) Growth and Environmental Effects During", will be...
PURPOSE: THE PROPOSED WORK WILL FOCUS ON THE SEASONAL CHANGES IN SCALLOP ABUNDANCE, DISTRIBUTION, REPRODUCTIVE STAGE, AND HEALTH STATUS, AS WELL AS SEASONAL BYCATCH RATES AND SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL DISTRIBUTIONS OF EACH KEY BYCATCH SPECIES. OBJECTIVES ARE TO: 1) EVALUATE SEASONAL BIOMASS CHANGES OF SCALLOPS WITHIN GEORGES BANK (GB), 2) INVESTIGATE SEASONAL AND SPATIAL VARIATIONS IN SCALLOP SPAWNING WITHIN GB, 3) EVALUATE SEASONAL CHANGES IN SCALLOP HEALTH, 4) INVESTIGATE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PREDATORS AND, SCALLOPS AND CLAPPERS, 5) EVALUATE SEASONAL CHANGES IN THE DISTRIBUTION AND ABUNDANCE OF KEY BYCATCH SPECIES, 6) DETERMINE YELLOWTAIL AND WINDOWPANE FLOUNDER SPAWNING PERIOD, AND 7) CONDUCT BIOLOGICAL SAMPLING OF AMERICAN LOBSTER CAUGHT IN THE DREDGES. RESEARCH WILL TAKE PLACE OVER A ONE-YEAR PERIOD ON FORTY-NINE STATIONS SPREAD ACROSS EASTERN AND SOUTHEASTERN GB FISHING GROUNDS. VESSELS WILL BE EQUIPPED WITH TWO SCALLOP DREDGES; ONE OF THE DREDGES WILL USE A COVER NET TO CATCH INDIVIDUALS THAT WOULD OTHERWISE ESCAPE.
