The National Endowment for the Humanities awarded a $100,000 project grant to The Research Foundation For The State University Of New York (operating as State University College) for the "Virtual Aquapolis" project. The grant, funded through the agency's Promotion of the Humanities Public Programs (CFDA 45.164), will support the development of an immersive virtual reality (VR) and interactive web experience that examines over 400 years of environmental history and human transformation of New York Harbor. The project will create five scenes depicting key eras in the harbor's underwater ecology and history, allowing public audiences to virtually explore this dynamic cultural and ecological crossroads. This 2-year project grant, spanning July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2026, aims to enhance public understanding of the harbor's complex environmental history through innovative digital humanities programming.
